ZOEY
Zoey is a 2 year old brindle female with natural ears. She is a beautiful girl who came into rescue because of unfortunate circumstances in her previous home. Zoey lived with an older female shepherd who had recently died and a younger male shepherd who had been diagnosed with cancer. Due to Zoey's dominant nature, the family felt it best to place her into another home.
Zoey needs a companion who is just as energetic as she, who can help her release some of energy. She is always ready to play and needs no excuse to go for a walk or play with toys. She loves to give kisses in an attempt to get anyone to play with her.
She should be placed with another active dog. When Zoey does not have activity, she can be a bit of a chewer. She is highly motivated by treats, useful for training purposes. She is learning to walk better on a leash with the help of her foster home.
Zoey has done very well with her foster dane brother. Zoey has lived with kids and medium sized dogs. She has not been tested with cats. Zoey also has a strong prey drive and should not be placed with small animals. She has a happy tail but is well on her way to recovery.
Zoey came to MAGDRL in March 2010.
Update June 18: You couldn't ask for a more adorable Great Dane than Zoey. She has done fantastically in her foster home and absolutely loves every person she meets. Over the past 3 months, it has been observed that Zoey does not necessarily have dominance issues like we had been told. The best way to explain it would be to say the she is a "close talker." She likes to get face to face with you or just look at you with her big beautiful soft brown eyes. But, not all other dogs appreciate having a 36" dane in their personal space. So, we do still think that Zoey will do fine with another large breed male dog.
Zoey has been with children of various ages and has done wonderfully with all of them. Due to her size, it might be best if Zoey not be placed with very young children or small dogs. Zoey is such a sweetheart and will cover you with kisses if given the chance. She loves her toys and you can always count on Zoey to greet you upon your entrance to a room with some type of gift... whether it be a chew toy, a stuffie or a bone. Regarding the strong prey drive that was brought to our attention prior to her arrival, we have seen no evidence of this at all. After a bit of a challenge, Zoey's Happy Tail is all better. She had a partial tail docking and this remedied all of the issues. She is microchipped and has her stomach tacked. Zoey really is a gem and could add so much love to a family.
Special requirements: Cats unknown; large active canine companions preferred.
